Forty Years After Chernobyl, Fifteen Years After Fukushima: Learning from Two Major Nuclear Disasters

An exhibition and educational program exploring the lessons of the Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disasters opened at Sofia University in the Bulgarian capital. Organized by the Department of Japanese Studies at Sofia University in collaboration with iBoost Entertainment, the project aims to examine the lessons humanity must learn from the two largest nuclear accidents in history.
The opening ceremony featured lectures by Oleksandr Tyshchenko (Alex Luna), Advisor to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, and Professor Shigeru Yoshida. They were joined by documentary filmmaker Setsuko Kanie, director of Message from Fukushima: Nevertheless, We Continue to Live Here, and Dr. Martin Dimitrov of Sofia University.
Chernobyl and Fukushima remain the only two nuclear accidents classified as Level 7 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES). Alongside Professor Yoshida's photographs, the exhibition also featured works by Ukrainian photographer Vladyslav Krasnoshchok.
ブルガリアの首都にあるソフィア大学においてチェルノブイリ原発事故と福島第一原発事故をテーマとした展覧会が開幕しました。これは人類史上最大級の原子力災害から得られる教訓を探るための教育プログラムの一環であり、ソフィア大学日本学科とiBoost Entertainmentによって企画されたものです。オープニングセレモニーではウクライナ最高会議（国会）人権オンブズマン顧問のアレクサンドル・ティシチェンコ（Alex Luna）氏と吉田繁先生が講演。福島原発事故後の人々を捉えたドキュメンタリー映画の監督である蟹江節子氏、ソフィア大学のマルティン・ディミトロフ博士も加わりました。
チェルノブイリと福島は、国際原子力事象評価尺度（INES）においてレベル7に分類された唯一の事故です。展示では吉田先生の作品とともにウクライナの写真家ウラジスラフ・クラスノショク氏の作品も紹介されました。

The lecture opened with remarks by the project's producer, Alex Luna (Oleksandr Tyshchenko), Advisor to the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine. He spoke about the significance of the project and its mission to promote international dialogue and a deeper understanding of the enduring consequences of nuclear disasters.
講演会はプロデューサーであるウクライナ最高会議（国会）人権オンブズマン顧問のアレクサンドル・ティシチェンコ（Alex Luna）氏からこのプロジェクトのいぎについて語られました。
Shigeru Yoshida presented footage of the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. His presentation described the forced evacuations that followed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident and examined the construction of exceptionally high seawalls built as part of the reconstruction efforts. Through these examples, he introduced the audience to some of the complex challenges and lasting consequences of the disaster and the recovery process.
吉田繁は2011年に起きた東日本大震災の津波の映像を観客の皆さんに提示。福島原発の事故直後に強制避難させられた事実や復興のために建設された高過ぎる防潮堤のことなどが発表されました。
At the venue, the documentary film Message from Fukushima: Nevertheless, We Continue to Live Here, directed by Setsuko Kanie, was screened. The presentation also introduced the eighteen individuals featured in the film and shared some of the heartfelt comments received from audiences following screenings held across East Asia. These moving reflections demonstrated how the stories of Fukushima have resonated with people from different countries and cultures.
会場では蟹江節子さんのドキュメンタリー映画『福島からのメッセージ～それでも私たちはここで生きていく』を上映。映画に登場する18名の人々についてや、東アジアの上映会で映画の観賞後に現地の人々から言われた心温まる感想などにも触れられました。
As 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, most of the attendees—students from the Department of Japanese Studies at Sofia University—were born long after the accident and had no firsthand experience of it. The event was therefore regarded as an important opportunity to introduce a younger generation to the often overlooked realities surrounding nuclear safety, while encouraging them to reflect on the lessons of both Chernobyl and Fukushima.
2026年にチェルノブイリ事故40周年を迎えますが、この講演会の参加者のほとんどであるソフィア大学の日本語学科の生徒たちはその事実を体験していない。そんな彼らにも原子力の安全に関する「隠された真実」を知らせるという意味でたいへん重要なイベントして注目されました。
Although the participants had a strong interest in Japan, many were unfamiliar with the television footage that was broadcast throughout Japan following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster—particularly the scenes of the tsunami and the explosions at the nuclear power plant. Yoshida's presentation gave them a deeper understanding of the devastating human and social consequences of the nuclear accident and encouraged them to reflect on its lasting impact.
日本に対する興味を持つ参加者たちだが、福島原発事故が起きた当時、日本中で流れたニュース映像(おもに津波と福島第一原発の爆発の映像)についてはよく知らない。吉田の発表によって、改めて、原発事故の悲惨さを感じたようでした。
The presentation argued that many of the lessons from nuclear accidents have yet to be fully learned, particularly regarding the long-term environmental and health risks faced by affected communities. It introduced medical and radiological findings alongside the social trauma experienced by those impacted by the disaster. The presentation also discussed research examining observations related to the health of children and young people in Japan following the Fukushima nuclear accident.
原発事故の多くの教訓が依然として十分に学ばれておらず、とくに人々に及ぶ長期的な環境・健康リスクが過小評価されていると指摘。本展覧会は、医学・放射線学的データと社会的トラウマを紹介しました。研究では、日本の事故後における子どもや若者への健康影響についての観察結果も取り上げられました。
