A Memorial Photo Exhibition for Andrey Martynov

A farewell gathering for our mentor who taught us the importance of international exchange.

A Memorial Photo Exhibition for Andrey Martynov

He was the one who taught us the value of sharing our hearts through art, while honoring and respecting one another across cultures.

June 19th -July 31st, 2025 / 2025
Andrey Martynov, a distinguished curator and leading figure in the Russian art photography world, was an invaluable mentor to us in the realm of international exchange. Since we first connected with him in 2017, he organized and curated more than a dozen exhibitions between 2017 and 2024, including SAMURAI FOTO group shows and solo exhibitions by Shigeru Yoshida, held in Russia, Italy, Los Angeles, China, and other countries.
In 2018, he brought a group exhibition of Russian photographers to Tokyo, where he also gave a special lecture hosted by SAMURAI FOTO. Beyond these public events, he continually reviewed our works and offered thoughtful advice whenever he could.
To us, he was not only a curator but a true mentor in international cultural exchange.
At the end of last year, Andrey passed away suddenly. This memorial exhibition was organized by his son, and we are honored to participate by sharing our greetings via video and contributing our photographs in tribute.

The Motivation for the exhibition

A Memorial Photo Exhibition for Andrey Martynov

It was on July 1st, 2017, at the international photography festival “PHOTO fest.KZ” held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, that Ms. Kanie and I first met Andrey Martynov.

From that time until just before his passing, he continued to think about and plan our group exhibitions and Mr. Yoshida’s solo shows.
I clearly remember him saying many times, “I’ll keep working on international exchange through photography—because I know how wonderful it is to share.”

It already felt like a dream that so many exhibitions were realized overseas, but in 2024, thanks to Andrey’s generous support, the works of six of our members were accepted into the permanent collection of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
It was truly a moment that went beyond our dreams. (On the left is Ms. Olga Averyanova, Chief Curator of the Photography Department at the Pushkin Museum.)

Novosibirsk is the largest city in the Siberian region.
The venue for Andrey’s memorial photo exhibition is the Fine Art City Center—a place full of memories, where Andrey organized our very first group exhibition there in 2019.

In addition to works by SAMURAI FOTO, the exhibition featured photographs by many of Andrey’s friends from abroad, including artists from Sweden and Italy.

Yet it was our members’ works that were given the largest exhibition space—something we are truly grateful for.
SAMURAI FOTO

I’m reminded of how, from that time on, Andrey showed us―through both his words and actions―the beauty of sharing ideas, cultures, and perspectives on art with people from different countries.

Thanks to the kindness of Andrey’s son, Ilya Martynov, our video message was shown on a large display at the venue, allowing us to participate even though we could not be there in person.

The news of Andrey’s passing at the end of 2024 came as a sudden shock.
Because I had always believed we would meet again in person—not just online—it brought me some relief to finally be able to express my gratitude and feelings to him, even if only through words.

The members whose works were accepted into the collection of the Pushkin Museum especially wished to thank Andrey in person.
We have now made a promise with his son, Ilya, to carry on Andrey’s legacy and continue working together to promote international exchange.

Following his father’s wishes, Ilya hopes to continue fostering activities that share feelings and thoughts through art. We share this vision and are committed to maintaining our ongoing relationship with SAMURAI FOTO.

There are few people who have supported us as much as he did. He taught us the importance of sharing our passion for art across different cultures. We are truly grateful.
Carrying forward his spirit, SAMURAI FOTO will continue creating new works and joyfully pursuing international exchange.
