From PHOTO VISA — In Memory of Andrey and the Beginning of a New International Photography Festival
The works of Yoshida and Kanie were exhibited at the Novosibirsk International Photography Festival.
Through this connection, we were invited to the international program “Siberia Speaks…” at the Novosibirsk Photography Festival.

In 2014, Professor Shigeru Yoshida was invited to PHOTO VISA, an international photography festival held annually in the academic city of Krasnodar, in southwestern Russia. During that visit, he gave advice to a student who was then studying photography.
Years later, in January of this year, a memorial photography exhibition was held in Andrey’s hometown of Novosibirsk. The same student helped organize the exhibition and there, she encountered Professor Yoshida’s works once again.
That student was Alyona Falevich., who has since become the coordinator of the international program at the Novosibirsk Photography Festival. It was through her that we received the invitation to participate.
How mysterious the ties of fate can be. Even a brief encounter can blossom into a lasting connection. This experience reminded us once again that international exchange is filled with such precious and meaningful encounters.
ロシア南西部の学園都市クラスノダールで毎年開催されている国際写真祭“PHOTO VISA”に吉田繁が招待されたのは2014年のこと。そのとき写真を勉強中のひとりの学生にアドバイスをします。
それから時が経ち、今年1月、アンドレイさんの故郷ノボシビルスクで追悼写真展が開催されました。学生はこの展覧会のお手伝いをし、その中で吉田の作品に再会します。
その学生がAlyona Falevich.さんで、ノボシビルスク写真祭国際プログラムの担当になった彼女から出展の依頼が来ました。
縁とは不思議なものです。ほんの少しの時間でも触れ合ったことがきっかけで繋がっていく。国際交流ではそんな尊い出会いに満ちていると、改めて痛感しました。

心が通じ合った人とはまた会える
Although we were initially concerned about whether Alyona, who had limited experience in organizing exhibitions, could manage everything smoothly, her dedication and sincerity shone through in both the exhibition and the opening ceremony.
The exhibition was held as part of the international program of the Novosibirsk Photography Festival, whose 2025 theme was “Siberia Speaks…” The venue, Art Residence “Respect,” is a creative space for young artists, yet it drew a diverse audience of people of all ages.
展覧会開催の経験も浅いけれど、一生懸命さが感じられたアリヨナさんによる展示とオープニング・セレモニー。ノヴォシビルスク写真祭国際プログラムの一環としての展覧会で、2025年の祭典のテーマは「シベリアが語りかける…」でした。会場はアートレジデンス「リスペクト」という若者向け創作スペースでしたが、老若男女たくさんの人々が集まりました。
In addition to Professor Yoshida, works by seven photographers from Kazakhstan, Finland, Poland, Italy, and other countries were exhibited, totaling 105 pieces.
Due to current circumstances, it was not possible to send prints from Japan, so everything—from printing to the display method and installation—had to be entrusted entirely to the local team. Although there were some points we were not fully satisfied with, we were deeply impressed by their courage and determination to hold the exhibition under such challenging conditions.
吉田以外にカザフスタン、フィンランド、ポーランド、イタリアなど合計7名の写真家の作品総数105点が展示されました。現状ではプリントを送れない事情もあって、プリントから展示方法、設営まですべて現地任せしかできず、不満点もありましたが、そんななかでの勇気ある開催だと感心しました。

The purpose of this exhibition is to promote cultural dialogue between countries through photography and to showcase national identities. It also aims to provide young photographers and artists with opportunities to foster international collaboration and friendship.
この展覧会の目的は他国の写真を通じて国家間の文化的対話を促進し、国民的アイデンティティを紹介することを目的としています。また、若手写真家やアーティストが国際的な協力と友情を育むきっかけとなることも目指しているそうです。
I have heard that a very large number of people attended the opening, and the atmosphere was incredibly moving. In particular, many visitors commented on Yoshida’s exhibition, saying that it “touched their hearts” and “resonated deeply.”
オープニングには非常に多くの方が来場され、その雰囲気が非常に感動的だったと聞いています。とくに吉田の展示について、多くの方が「心に刺さった」「胸に響いた」と言っていたそうです。
Interview
We also received a heartfelt comment from one of the participants. They said that while Professor Yoshida’s photographs were moving, they were equally touched by the exhibition’s use of candles and byß Kanie’s documentary film.
参加者のおひとりからも心温まる感想をいただきました。吉田の写真も感動的だったけれど、キャンドルを灯す展示法、蟹江さんのドキュメンタリー映画にもとても心動かされたと語ってくださっています。

This is Yoshida’s fourth project related to the Great East Japan Earthquake, featuring his latest work, A Prayer in the wind.
こちらは吉田の東日本大震災にまつわる4つ目のプロジェクトで最新作「祈りの光」の展示作品です。
Thanks to Alyona’s idea, she placed candles under the photos for the lantern floating event. As a result, several visitors said they wanted to light one themselves.
アリヨナさんのアイディアで灯籠流しの写真の下にはキャンドルを灯しました。すると、何人もの来場者から私も灯したいと言われたそうです。
Venue (Movie)
These are prayer candles from the people of Novosibirsk, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the disaster, those who lost their families, and those who continue to live courageously in its aftermath.
震災で亡くなった人、家族を亡くした人、残されて懸命に生きる人々、その人々に向けて、ノポシビルクの人々からの祈りのキャンドルです。

A section of the exhibition featuring Yoshida’s first project related to the Great East Japan Earthquake: “One Minute – Border for a Prayer (2012–2022)”.
東北大震災にまつわる最初のプロジェクト「祈りの境界 / One minute- Border for a Prayer (2012∼2022)」からの展示コーナー。
The third project, “Message from Fukushima ― "Embracing Despair, Discovering Peace"― (2019– )”, features portraits of people affected by the disaster, accompanied by their words.
3つ目のプロジェクト”Message from Fukushima ― Finding hope and courages ― (2019- )”。被災した人々のポートレートでその言葉が添えられている。
Artist Statement for the Third Project
This project conveys the voices recorded through interviews with disaster survivors, alongside their portraits. By layering words with the images—expressing thoughts and emotions that photographs alone cannot fully capture—it brings each individual’s life story to the forefront.
3つ目のプロジェクトに関するアーティスト・ステートメント。被災者へのインタビューを通じて記録された声をポートレートと共に伝えるプロジェクトです。写真だけでは語り尽くせない思いを言葉と重ねることで一人ひとりの人生の物語として立ち上げます。

映像で伝える被災者たちの今
Kanie’s 28-minute documentary features 16 survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake. It portrays people who, 14 years after the disaster, are living positively and with strength. After the screening, even when the theater lights came on, no one got up; the audience remained seated in quiet reflection.
蟹江さんのドキュメンタリー映画(28分)には東日本大震災の被災者16名が登場します。震災14年目の現在を前向きに力強く生きる人々です。上映終了後、全てが終わって劇場の照明が点いても誰も立ち上がらずに静かに座り続けていたそうです。
