Bald Cypress, named ‘Árbol del Tule’ is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s biggest tree. The name means ‘the water old man’ in the native language of Mexico. The tree needs a lot of water. As the increase of the population, they face the water shortage. So the irrigation system is made under the tree. This tree is 2,000 years old and 42m tall. The root diameter is 14.85m. The Guinness book says its estimated weight is 636 tons. I actually measured the trunk and it was 45m.

Kauri is the largest species in New Zealand and the ‘Tāne Mahuta’ is the highest Kauri in the country. In Maori, it means ‘God of the forest’. It is 51.5m tall and the trunk girth is 13.8m. The age is over 2,000 years. Up until 200 years ago, there was Kauri forest in the North Island. As it had high quality for lumber, Kauri had been cut down for lumbers. Finally, it banned logging the trees in 1951. This Kauri tree has been through all the history.

There is a large Baobab Tree in Limpopo, South Africa. The tree became famous internationally for the bar inside of the tree. I went there to measure the trunk and the size was 45.1m, which was a little larger than ‘Árbol del Tule’ in Mexico. A few years ago back then, I found this Baobab tree. The trunk is the same size as the bar tree, but the inside wasn’t hollow. Of course, there is no bar. The Baobab has grown big and strong in the out of a small village and I have a special fondness for it.

Tenerife is a Spanish island but it is much closer to African continent. There are many endemic species of plants and animals. Dragon Tree is one of the famous species. This tree is said to be 1,000 years old and the trunk girth is 16.3m. When the bark is damaged, it gives red sap which looks blood. I have never seen the mysterious broccoli-like form of the tree like this before. It grows slow and can live long. Also, it can hold up in dry conditions.

This Baobab is in the Animal Reserve of Zimbabwe. The Gonarezhou is the name of the national park, which means the place with a lot of elephants. As it is named, there are many elephants and many of the Baobabs’ barks were torn off by them. In this reserve, there is a Baobab tree which got a large hollow. In the past poachers had hid inside of the tree and hunt rhinoceros. I wonder it was one of the involuntary things for Baobab tree.

Katsura Tree is also called soy sauce tree because in autumn the colored leaves give subtle sweet smell around. The trees are aquatic and many of them grow near the streams.
It sends out a lot of tillers and the trunk gets wider and thicker. In general, many of trees have one big trunk but Katsura Tree have several thin trunks growing toward the sky. It is quite attractive to see blooming bright red flowers in early spring.
